Chapter 10

“Thank you, Pastor, for agreeing to see us on such short notice,” Griffith said as he shook the man’s hand.

After talking with Stone, Griffith hated to admit it, but the idea of a big, lavish wedding with all their friends was definitely something Griffith would have loved before he’d turned into a hermit. Since Stone came back into his life, Griffith had been trying to find that man he’d been once more.

Not that he would ever regain that youthful optimism for the future after being brutally beaten, but he missed being more outgoing and fun. Griffith had never been the life of the party, like Jesse, but he had known how to party and let loose.

He still wasn’t sure nine couples being married was feasible, but after talking with Stone, he was willing to try. Which meant his first stop would need to be the church to see if they could fit all nine couples in the front.

By the time they’d come out of that janitor’s closet, Jesse was being detained in the security office for arguing with a dealer on the way she was dealing cards. After reviewing the footage and finding the dealer had been doing her job correctly, they had decided to wait for Stone.

Glares from everyone in the room were sent Stone’s way the moment they walked into the security office. Yikes. Griffith was sure glad he wasn’t in Stone’s shoes.

A quick explanation by Tori had them caught up on what had transpired. “Jesse, is there a reason you think the cards weren’t dealt correctly?” Stone asked warily.

Griffith couldn’t blame him. With Jesse, one never really knew what was about to come out of his mouth.

A dramatic foot stomp and scowl were given as Jesse said, “I wasn’t getting the cards I needed to make twenty-one.” A pink painted finger nail was pointed in Griffith’s direction. “You can ask him. This is my lucky day. I should have gotten blackjack.”

Trying not to laugh at the absurdity of Jesse’s reasoning, Griffith said, “Why don’t I just take him home?” Not waiting for an answer, especially since everyone in the room looked like they were trying not to laugh outright at Jesse, Griffith took his friend by the hand and dragged him from the room.

But with Jesse being Jesse, he didn’t go willingly, or quietly. “But I haven’t won yet. I just need another chip and I’m sure I can do it this time.” Jesse tried to tug his arm away. Griffith was not only stronger, but with Jesse’s three-inch boots, his friend couldn’t get any traction to effectively stop Griffith. “This isn’t fair. If you were me, I’d help you.”

As per usual, Jesse was making a scene, and Griffith hated being the center of attention. So he did the only thing he could think of. “If you leave with me quietly, we’ll go see Pastor Powell and talk to him about doing all nine weddings at the same time.”

Jesse perked up at that. “Really? You mean
